WhatsApp marketing for growing brands: a practical, permission-first playbook
WhatsApp gets open rates email can only dream of, but only if you use it with care. Here's how to set it up, what to send and what to avoid.
Daksh TrivediFounder, Dhyanam Digital Solution · 1 min readFor billions of people, WhatsApp is where real conversations happen. That makes it a powerful marketing channel, and one that's easy to misuse.
This playbook covers how to use WhatsApp in a way customers welcome.
Start with the right setup
The free WhatsApp Business app works for very small volumes. If you want broadcasts, automation or multiple team members, you'll need the WhatsApp Business Platform (API) through an approved provider.
Permission comes first
Only message people who have clearly opted in to hear from you on WhatsApp. Good places to collect opt-in include:
- Website forms and checkout, with a clearly worded tick box
- Click-to-WhatsApp ads, where the customer starts the conversation
- In-store QR codes
Always make it easy to opt out. (Rules vary by country, so confirm requirements with your legal adviser.)
Five messages that work
- Welcome message with a useful offer or guide
- Order and booking updates customers actually want
- Abandoned-cart reminders, sent once, politely
- Back-in-stock and launch alerts for people who asked
- Quick support answers through a simple chatbot with human hand-off
What to avoid
- Sending daily promotions
- Messaging people who never opted in
- Long blocks of text. Keep it short and scannable.
- Bots with no route to a human
Measure what matters
Track replies, clicks and conversions rather than just delivery. And watch your number's quality rating, which drops if people block or report you.
